Speakers Detail


Khurram Afridi

Khurram Afridi is an Assistant Professor of ECEE and the Goh Faculty Fellow at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder. He received the BS degree in EE from Caltech (1989), and SM (1992) and PhD (1998) degrees in EECS from MIT. His research interests are in power electronics and energy systems incorporating power electronic controls. Prior to joining CU Boulder he was a visiting faculty at MIT's EECS Department (2009-2013) and the COO (2000-2010) and CTO (1997-2000) of Techlogix. From 2004 to 2008 he led the development of LUMS School of Science and Engineering (SSE) as Project Director. He has also worked for JPL, Lutron, Philips, and Schlumberger. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification and IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, and was the Technical Program Committee (TPC) chair for the IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC) 2015. He received the Carnation Merit Award from Caltech (1988), the BMW Scientific Award from BMW AG (1999), the Werner-von-Siemens Chair for Power Electronics from LUMS SSE (2008), the Dean’s Professional Progress Award from CU Boulder (2015), the ECEE Department Outstanding Overall Performance Award from CU Boulder (2016), and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award from NSF (2016). He is co-author of four IEEE prize papers.


Mohid Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir

Prof Zainal is a Professor at CELP UPM and also associated with the Faculty of Engineering, UPM. He is also a WG Member of IEEE PES Lightning Performance on Overhead Lines and the Advisor of CELP, UPM. He is an Advisory Board Member for National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI), USA and Local Convener of SC C4 of MNC-CIGRE. He is a Professional Engineer and a Chartered Engineer, as well as member of IEM, IEEE, IET, CIGRE. Prof Zainal is also an IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer. He has been awarded Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) recognition in 2014.


Mahmood Nagrial

Mahmood Nagrial obtained his Ph.D. from University of Leeds, UK. Dr Nagrial has extensive experience in Power Electronics and Drive Systems, Renewable Energy Systems. He has been Head, Electrical & Computer Engineering. He has also been Chair, School of Mechatronic, Computer & Electrical Engineering. He has also been responsible for initiating postgraduate courses and higher degree research programs in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering. He is Group Leader of Research Group “Intelligent & Sustainable Electrical Systems”. He has conducted many short courses and contributed refereed papers to Journals and International conferences. Dr Nagrial has been a leading researcher in the area of permanent magnet; variable reluctance machines & drive systems. He has supervised Ph.D. and M.Eng. (Hons) Research Theses and postdoctoral fellows. He has conducted many short courses and published extensively in International Journals and refereed papers in International conferences. He has over 300 research publications. Dr Nagrial has been a leading researcher in the area of permanent magnet, variable reluctance machines & drive systems. Before joining Western Sydney University to start and develop engineering programs, he worked as Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO in Sydney, where he has been responsible for developing new devices using rare-earth magnets. Dr Nagrial is a Fellow of IET (UK), IE (Aust) and Senior Member IEEE(USA), Fellow IEEE(Pak) and Fellow IE(Pak).


Shoab Ahmed Khan

Dr. Shoab Ahmed Khan is Professor in college of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, National University of Sciences & Technology. He is an inventor of 5 awarded US patents and has 260+ international publications. His book on Digital Design is published by John Wiley & Sons and is being followed in national and international universities. Dr. Shoab Ahmed Khan has more than 22 years of industrial experience in companies in USA and Pakistan. He has been awarded Tamgh-e-Imtiaz (Civil), National Education Award 2001 and NCR National Excellence Award in Engineering Education. He is the Chairman of Pakistan Association of Software Houses (P@SHA) and is a member of Board of Governance of many entities in the Ministry of IT and Commerce. He has also served as member of National Computing Council and National Curriculum Review Committee.


Kamran Iqbal

Prof. Kamran Iqbal obtained his BE in Aeronautical Engineering from NED University, and his MS and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University with emphasis on Control and Dynamic Systems. He has since held academic appointments at College or Aeronautical Engineering, GIK Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Northwestern University, California State University at Fullerton, University of California, Riverside, University of California, Irvine, and University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he currently serves as Professor of Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering and Information Technology. His research interests include biomechanics and motor control of human movement, myoelectric control of prosthesis, and biomedical signal and image processing. He is a member of IEEE (USA), IET (UK), BMES, ASEE, IASTED, and Sigma Xi. He is a regular contributor to the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology conference.


Ahmed Shuja Syed

Prof. Shuja is the Advisor to the Rector & President, International Islamic University (IIU), Islamabad, Executive Director of Centre for Advanced Electronics & Photovoltaic Engineering and the Principal Investigator of Islamic Development Bank's Funded International Research Grants, namely, Advanced Electronics Laboratories Project and Photovoltaic Energy Engineering Labs. He is also the Proponent & Focal Point of US Department of Energy’s Users Facility Access Agreement with International Islamic University.
